The Word Matters

The Gospel of Christ

There are many passages of scripture that the masses can readily quote.  One of the most well-known verses in the entire Bible is Romans 1:16.  It says, in part, that “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes.”  There is such a simple truth contained in this powerful statement.  A nugget of truth that can ensure each and every one of us the victory in our life that we so eagerly desire.  But, like any other Kingdom reality, we must appropriate it in our lives to see God’s best manifest.  To do that, we have to truly get a revelation of what it means.

“Christ” is not Jesus’ last name.  The word literally means “the anointed one” and also contains in it the anointing that goes with Him.  An easier way would be to say that Christ means “the anointed one and His anointing.”  When the Bible talks about the believer being “in Christ” or in “the Body of Christ”, it is not referring to us being in Jesus, the person, as much as it is referring to us dwelling in His anointing and all of the benefits and results it carries with it.

So, then, what does “anointing” mean?  Most people would say things like “Oh, anointing is one of those spiritual words and I don’t understand it.”  They just brush it off and chalk it up to something that they can never understand.  The Bible is clear about it, though.  We can look to Isaiah 10:27 and see that the anointing is the Godly force that can take burdens from off of your shoulder and destroy yokes of bondage in your life.  I like to say that the anointing is “the burden removing, yoke destroying power of God.”

Basically, if you are a believer, God doesn’t want you to be weighed down in life.  He doesn’t want you to have things in your life that are a burden to you or that are a yoke of bondage that the enemy has placed in your life to weigh you down and keep you from running your Kingdom race with confidence.  No way!  He wants you to be free to be effective for the Kingdom and readily see the results that He has ordained for you.

No wonder Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30 that we should rest in Him.  He said we can experience this rest because His yoke is easy and His burden is light.  You think it was a coincidence that He used those words… yoke and burden?  I don’t!  He is THE CHRIST… the anointed one!  There is no yoke or burden that can stand in His presence and, guess what?  You are in Christ!  You are right in the place where burdens and yokes lose their authority.

Now Romans 1:16 makes perfect sense.  It is powerful when we understand that we have an assurance that keeps us from shame.  Why?  Because there is no shame when you are in Christ!  There is nothing in that anointed place that can keep you from the victorious life you were created to live.

So, today, simply rest in that good news.  That’s why Paul called it the gospel of Christ.  Gospel means good news, and there is no better news that I can think of than to know that I belong in the place where burdens are removed, yokes are destroyed, and I can be complete!  That makes it the “power of God to salvation.”  Anything you can think of today that you need “saved from”, whether it is disharmony in relationships, poor health, or condemnation from the enemy, the answer lies in knowing who you are IN CHRIST!

Rest in that today.  Rest in Him today.  You are in Christ and there is no better place to live!

Pure Hearts Lead to a Pure Nation

When you think of the nation in which you live, what is your first thought?  Are you thankful that you are privileged to live in such a place?  Are you concerned with the direction in which the nation, as a whole, is heading?  Do you ever dream that your country could get to a place where Godly values, morality, and brotherly love would absolutely forge the pathway toward every decision that is made for the good of its people?  Please know today that you are not alone if you have thought any of these things.  You may certainly feel like you are in the minority, but that may not necessarily be the case.

Man’s Greatest Need

Man sure does have a lot of needs.  A simple start to the list would be air, water, food, sleep, clothes, heat, family, love, affection, freedom, money, relationships, shelter, health, purpose, stability, order, protection, identity, and hope.  Woman needs all of those plus makeup, hairspray, jewelry, and that perfect little black dress, right?  All joking aside, no matter how you look at it, we all live in a world where we need certain things in order to survive and certain other things in order to thrive.  Although all of those things listed above are certainly needed in life, I believe man’s greatest need to be PEACE.

What Quest Are You On?

Each and every one of our lives has a destiny.  Although we have a wonderful eternal promise that is shown to us all throughout the New Testament (John 3:16 and 1 John 2:25, for example), right now I’m talking about something different.  Much like Paul, we should all be striving to live a life where at the end, we can look back and say that we fought a good fight, that we have finished our course, and have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7).  Today, I want to talk about that COURSE.  You have a course that your life can and should take that fully reveals the heart of your heavenly Father.  This should be a path of victory that demonstrates His love, goodness, and provision in each and every area of your life!

Get Right or Get Left

I often chuckle when I think of some of the phrases that the church world has produced over the years.  You have all seen them.  They are on T-shirts, lapel pins, ink pens, notebooks, hats, billboards, those signs outside of churches, and even the infamous bumper stickers.  Now, I’m not making fun here, but let’s be honest, some of those bumper stickers have not exactly portrayed the believer as an appealing, thoughtful person.  But even though many of those bumper stickers are just plain corny, there are many good ones out there.  Some are simple and to the point like “Got Jesus?”.  Some are very ironic like “Don’t be a bumper sticker Christian”.  Others are just kind of funny like “Are you following JESUS this close?” or one of my favorites, “Honk if you love Jesus! (Text while driving if you want to meet Him)”.

Appropriate the Light

Undoubtedly, each of us has heard at one time or another that God is love (1 John 4:16).  It is one of the key certainties that we have learned about who our Heavenly Father is and what His nature entails.  Because of that truth, we can rest in the fact that our creator IS love and we can then view all of life’s situations and circumstances through that lens to make sure that we keep a proper view.  Among many other benefits, that gives us assurance that God is not the source of the difficult obstacles in our life.  Knowing that God is love enables the believer to live confidently in the middle of an uncertain world.

Walking In Light

There are not many places that I would rather be for a relaxing day, than at the beach.  It is so wonderful to be able to sit in a comfortable lounge chair with your toes dangling in the sand and listen as the soothing sounds of the tide virtually wash away every ounce of life’s stress with each and every wave.  Even though there are plenty of other good ways to unwind, I guess this would be my top choice.  It has been said that your worst day at the beach is better than your best day stuck at the office.  Perhaps the thing that I like best about the beach is that it is totally out there in the open.  The peaceful sunlight seems to burn away all fear of the unknown.  When you are at the beach, it is actually difficult to think about the trouble that awaits you back in the “daily grind” of life.  In fact, you have to close your eyes and concentrate really hard to forget the peacefulness of the beach and mentally place yourself back into the difficulty of life’s demands.  Beaches are truly one of God’s gifts of TRANQUILITY to man.

Dance With Who Brung Ya

These days, it seems like everybody wants to own the latest and greatest.  The computer that changed the entire computing world just three or four years ago is nearing obsolescence now.  The technology that revolutionized the music world in the last generation gave us CDs.  Now, those are virtually archaic, as this generation can put thousands of songs on an iPod less than a quarter of the size of just one CD.  It used to be cool to change the radio station with the push of a button on the steering wheel.  Now, all you have to do is ask politely.  Certainly, any lady whose husband is an avid golfer can tell you how often golf club technology improves.  “Here today and gone tomorrow” has never been more of a reality.

Grace – God’s Ability In You

If you have been in church at least one more time than never, you have probably heard of grace.  Somewhere along the line, you have surely heard or even said such things as “Oh, but for the grace of God, there go I” or “I sure thank God for His saving grace.”  If a friend tells you that they think their actions are good enough to be saved, you may respond by letting them know that the Bible says we can only be saved by God’s grace and not by our works.  Of course, “Amazing Grace” is perhaps the most well-known Christian song in human history.  There is certainly no shortage of GRACE in our vocabulary.

Finish Strong

Finish strong.  Have you ever heard that phrase before?  Maybe you have heard that it’s not how you start, but how you finish that matters the most.  Although each of us knows just how true that is, most people have a difficult time finishing the things that they start these days.  Take dieting as an example.  Do you know anyone who has made the quality decision to eat healthier foods that promote more energy, only to be back eating the same old stuff a couple of weeks later?  I can tell you that I certainly have done that!  Of course, there are many other examples.  Each year, millions start with a “New Year’s Resolution” to quit smoking, workout more, or gossip less.  Repeatedly, though, they fail to FINISH.
